Six reading patterns

Five vowels, real words

These checks use the vocabulary meanings listed for this pattern.

あお

Review this pattern’s vocabulary and model

ao · blue

  • あい · ai · love
  • うえ · ue · above; top
  • いえ · ie · house
  • あお · ao · blue
  • いい · ii · good — Keep both written い; this is a long vowel.

Read from left to right: あ + お. This starter set tests words, not sentence comprehension.

Vowels plus the K row

These checks use the vocabulary meanings listed for this pattern.

かお

Review this pattern’s vocabulary and model

kao · face

  • かお · kao · face
  • こえ · koe · voice
  • かき · kaki · persimmon — This example is the fruit. The same kana spelling can represent other words in different contexts.
  • えき · eki · station
  • きく · kiku · chrysanthemum — This example is the flower; きく can also spell the verb 'listen'.

か + お gives kao. Notice that the second character is the vowel お, not こ.

This is my umbrella

These checks use the vocabulary meanings listed for this pattern.

これは わたしの かさです。

Review this pattern’s vocabulary and model

kore wa watashi no kasa desu · This is my umbrella.

  • これ · kore · this
  • それ · sore · that
  • わたし · watashi · I; me
  • あなた · anata · you — Used here in a simple reading model; everyday Japanese often omits 'you' when context is clear.
  • の · no · links the owner to the thing: わたしの = my
  • かさ · kasa · umbrella
  • くつ · kutsu · shoes
  • です · desu · polite sentence ending for 'is/are'
  • は · wa · topic marker in these sentences — The spelling は is read wa when it is this particle.

Spaces are added for beginner reading; ordinary Japanese usually does not separate every word.

Pattern: これ/それ + は + owner + の + thing + です. Read は as wa here.

An animal and its location

These checks use the vocabulary meanings listed for this pattern.

ねこは いえに います。

Review this pattern’s vocabulary and model

neko wa ie ni imasu · The cat is in the house.

  • ねこ · neko · cat
  • いぬ · inu · dog
  • とり · tori · bird
  • いえ · ie · house
  • そと · soto · outside
  • に · ni · at/in a location in this pattern
  • います · imasu · is there; exists, for people and animals
  • は · wa · topic marker in these sentences — The spelling は is read wa here.

Pattern: animal + は + place + に + います.

These exercises teach a small sentence pattern; they do not assess general Japanese comprehension.

Read the object particle を

These checks use the vocabulary meanings listed for this pattern.

みずを のみます。

Review this pattern’s vocabulary and model

mizu o nomimasu · I drink water.

  • みず · mizu · water
  • ごはん · gohan · rice; a meal — The exercise uses the meaning 'rice'.
  • きっぷ · kippu · ticket — Small っ marks a long consonant; this is kip-pu, not ki-tsu-pu.
  • のみます · nomimasu · drink (polite form)
  • たべます · tabemasu · eat (polite form)
  • かいます · kaimasu · buy (polite form)
  • を · o · object marker — Enter wo on a romaji keyboard; read this particle o.

Pattern: object + を + action. The subject is omitted; these standalone exercise sentences use 'I' in the English translation.

Small っ and the P form in きっぷ need their pattern lesson before this set.

Go to school or the library

These checks use the vocabulary meanings listed for this pattern.

がっこうへ いきます。

Review this pattern’s vocabulary and model

gakkou e ikimasu · I go to school.

  • がっこう · gakkou · school — Small っ lengthens k; the final う commonly lengthens the o vowel.
  • としょかん · toshokan · library — Small ょ joins し to form sho.
  • いえ · ie · house; home
  • いきます · ikimasu · go (polite form)
  • へ · e · direction marker in this sentence — The particle is written へ and read e.
  • そと · soto · outside

Pattern: destination + へ + いきます.

The romaji keeps ou so you can match the spelling; the long vowel still takes an extra mora.

Short hiragana texts

Three short texts, with three, four and five sentences. Read each one, then answer a question about its meaning.

Open this text

This exercise describes the narrator’s morning meal. English supplies I for the omitted subject.

Reading, meaning and question answer

kesa wa ame desu watashi wa gohan to sakana o tabemasu mizu o nomimasu gohan wa oishii desu

It is rainy this morning. I eat rice and fish. I drink water. The rice is delicious.

Reading, meaning and question answer

kyou wa hare desu watashi to tomodachi wa eki e ikimasu watashi wa eki de kippu o kaimasu ashita wa toshokan e ikimasu kuruma de toshokan e ikimasu

It is sunny today. My friend and I go to the station. I buy a ticket at the station. Tomorrow I go to the library. I go to the library by car.

The third sentence says わたしは えきで きっぷを かいます: the speaker buys a ticket at the station.

How to read hiragana words

Small ゃ, ゅ and ょ join the preceding kana

きゃ is kya; きや is kiya. See the small-kana combinations.

A small っ holds the next consonant

きって is kitte. Give the next consonant an extra beat; do not read っ as tsu.

Keep written long vowels

おおきい is ookii. The reading labels here keep written vowels such as oo, ou and ei; a kana-to-romaji label is a spelling aid, not a recording.

Particles can have a different reading

Topic は reads wa, direction へ reads e, and object を reads o. Reading hints use these pronunciations when the character is a particle. は as a particle · へ as a particle · を as a particle.

Real Japanese mixes scripts

猫は そとに います。 mixes kanji and hiragana. These exercises use beginner hiragana spellings. See how the scripts share a sentence.

Questions about reading practice

Does this test listening?

No. These questions check written readings and meanings. Generated audio is available in the listening section.

Why are unfamiliar characters underlined?

A small set may not make enough words. The page chooses close examples and marks extra kana; tapping any kana records help for that first attempt. Your saved study set changes only when you choose to save it.

Can I practice one character in words?

Open reading practice from a character guide to focus on words containing that character. Extra kana are marked for help.

Teaching content is a draft; Japanese educator review is pending. Generated audio is available in the listening section. Kana models: KanjiVG, Ulrich Apel and contributors, CC BY-SA 3.0. Written checks do not assess pronunciation or listening.

Listen to the sounds and examples on this page

Generated speech: Google Cloud Text-to-Speech. Checked by a native Japanese speaker. Audio is available only for items with a Listen button. Listen plays at normal speed; Slow gives more listening time at the original pitch. Sound hints are drafts pending educator review.
