Spaces and line breaks stay intact. Use Japanese romaji, rather than English words. Check the output before copying.

Hiragana to romaji, or hiragana ↔ katakana

Use the same input and output boxes in each direction.

For a side-by-side reference, open the hiragana and katakana chart. When Japanese uses katakana instead of hiragana. For Japanese text containing kanji, use the kanji to hiragana reader and check its reading estimates. For vocabulary meanings, use a Japanese dictionary, such as Jisho.

Useful romaji typing patterns

Input spellings and the kana they produce
TypeResultWhat to check
shi / si · chi / ti · tsu / tu · fu / huし · ち · つ · ふCommon reading and keyboard spellings are both accepted.
gakkou · matchaがっこう · まっちゃA doubled consonant or tch gives a small っ in these examples.
kya · shu · choきゃ · しゅ · ちょSmall ゃ・ゅ・ょ combine with the preceding kana.
n · nna · n'a · shin'youん · んな · んあ · しんようFinal n converts immediately here. Use an apostrophe to separate ん from a following vowel or y.
sampo · shimbunさんぽ · しんぶんThe m spelling before b or p, after a vowel, is accepted as ん.
du / dzu · di / dziづ · ぢThese input spellings distinguish づ and ぢ from ず and じ.
xya · xtsu · xaゃ · っ · ぁAn x prefix requests a small kana. WanaKana also accepts l prefixes.
toukyou · ookiiとうきょう · おおきいUse the word’s kana spelling for long vowels. The macron ō alone cannot tell ou from oo.

About this romaji converter

Does this translate English or turn a name into Japanese?

No. Enter Japanese sounds written in romaji. English words and names need translation or a pronunciation-based adaptation first. A word made entirely of accepted Japanese syllables may still convert, so a result is not proof of correct Japanese.

Why does konnichiwa give こんにちわ?

The converter follows the letters you type. For the greeting’s conventional spelling こんにちは, enter konnichiha. It does not infer when wa, e or o is a particle written は, へ or を; type ha, he or wo for those spellings.

How do macrons such as ō and ē work?

Choose a long-vowel spelling when the macron control appears. For example, tōkyō needs the ou choice for とうきょう, while ōkii needs oo for おおきい. The choice applies to all macrons in the input. When one input needs different spellings, replace each macron in the input with the required letters, or convert words separately. For example, type toukyou ookii. For loanword-style long marks, the ー choice can turn kōhī into コーヒー in katakana mode. It cannot establish the correct spelling of an unfamiliar word.

Can I convert hiragana to romaji or switch kana scripts?

Choose the direction above the input. Kana to romaji accepts hiragana and katakana together and uses plain Hepburn-style spellings such as shi, chi, tsu and fu, plus sound spellings for loanword combinations such as ティ → ti and フィ → fi. These can differ from keyboard input: use thi to type ティ, for example. Romaji output is a spelling aid, not a pronunciation assessment. It keeps written vowel sequences, uses ji/zu for ぢ/づ and spells written は・へ・を as ha/he/wo without interpreting grammar. A supported ー repeats the preceding vowel in either script. Unresolved marks and rare kana stay unchanged with a warning. Kana script switching keeps ー unchanged: コーヒー becomes こーひー, rather than guessing a hiragana word spelling.

What happens to text the converter cannot read?

An unconvertible romaji word stays intact and is listed below the output. Kanji and unsupported kana stay unchanged with a warning. Numbers, punctuation, spaces, line breaks and emoji are kept. A warning means the copied result may still contain the original text.

Does this convert UTAU voicebanks, UST files or plugins?

This is a plain-text tool. You can copy converted lyric text, but it does not rename voicebank files, edit UST files, install plugins or check an alias convention.

Is my text saved or sent anywhere?

Conversion runs in your browser. The converter does not send or save your input. Changing the direction stores only that setting in the address. Reloading clears the text; your browser may retain form history independently.
