About this hiragana quiz

Which characters should I practice?

Start with the rows you have studied, or bring a selection from the hiragana chart. Choose Look-alikes to compare commonly confused shapes. This quiz covers 46 basic and 25 marked characters. All 46 selects the basics; marked sounds are separate choices. Small kana and two-kana combinations are outside this quiz.

What is the difference between practice and a full test?

Practice brings a missed or assisted character back after other questions where possible. A full test gives every selected character one scored first attempt, without scheduling later retries. You can still ask for help or try again; extra tries do not change the first-attempt score.

Which romaji spellings count?

The displayed readings use Hepburn spellings. Character questions also accept si for shi, ti for chi, tu for tsu, hu for fu, zi for ji (じ), and wo for を. This tests a reading, not a Japanese keyboard: ぢ is read ji and づ is read zu; keyboard inputs di and du are different. Word questions accept the same spellings, and m or n before b, p or m (tempura or tenpura, sampo or sanpo), ignoring spaces, letter case and a full stop at the end. Full-width letters count as well. If your keyboard types kana or kanji, the quiz does not score it and asks you to switch to English input.

Can I practice listening or writing here?

Generated audio is available in the listening section. This quiz checks written readings. Use stroke order for writing models, writing practice for tracing, and reading practice for longer texts.
